The Abortion Culture’s Assault on Innocent Human Life

This is a dark day in the history of the United States of America. Forty-two years ago, on January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States ‘legalized’ abortion on demand and this country has never recovered from the damage inflicted on our moral fiber as tens of millions of children have been sacrificed on the ‘altar of self’ out of expediency and delusion.

St. Paul asks us in 1 Corinthians, “Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”

Do we know this? I wonder.

Out of His infinite Goodness, God made you and He made me. He has great plans for each of us. He made us for Himself and set us apart to be holy as He is Holy. He is a Father; He wants the very best for His children. Because He loves us so much, the Blessed Trinity—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—dwells within our spiritual soul which is the form of the body. That is why St. Paul can ask us if we realize that we are temples of God.

The Prevailing Culture of Our Times…

We live in a time when this beautiful truth is obscured by a culture that is concerned with self.

So many have failed to seek the God who alone can satisfy their restless hearts and instead, they have sought satisfaction and fulfillment in the pursuit of immoral and sinful “pleasures.” We need only to look back to the sex and drug revolution that began in the 1960s to witness the onslaught of the prevailing culture on the Temple of God.

Artificial contraception was only the beginning. The immoral abuse of alcohol and illegal drugs destroyed our inhibitions, and the sinful use and inevitable failure of contraceptives in sexual relations outside of the marriage covenant resulted in a demand for abortion that the culture was all too quick to champion.

This is a dark day in the history of the United States of America. Forty-two years ago, on January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States “legalized” abortion on demand and this country has never recovered from the damage inflicted on our moral fiber as tens of millions of children have been sacrificed on the “altar of self” out of expediency and delusion.

Those who would defend abortion claim that a woman’s body is hers to do with as she wishes. That is wrong on two counts—first, a person’s body is the Temple of God and St. Paul says, “if anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person” and second, abortion is not about the mother’s body as much as it is about the baby’s body. It is the baby’s body that is attacked and dismembered in abortion and that is not the mother’s body. That is a scientific fact.

The attack on God’s Temple has not ended there, it’s reach is far and wide.

  • Use of illegal drugs and alcohol abuse are widespread.
  • Excessive vanity has led to all sorts of abusive behavior towards one’s body from dangerous cosmetic surgery to immoderate piercings, tattoos and mutilations and eating disorders
  • Parents seeking growth hormones to increase the height of their “vanity children”
  • Binge drinking and “free” sex among teenagers and the college-aged—engaged in as if it were just another contact sport for pleasure—signs of the gluttonous addictions of the culture
  • Children, who in a past age would engage in a fist-fight, have now escalated to 9mm handguns to settle disputes.
  • Marriages are discarded as quickly as a fast-food wrappers.
  • Dozens of wars and conflicts are waged around the world resulting in death, injury, hunger, homelessness and a lack of healthcare.
  • Illegal, commercial trading in human persons (slave trade) has not gone away; it has even expanded to body-parts.

The respect shown to human life has decreased in shocking degrees.  We should not be surprised, for if we do not respect a person’s right to life, why should we respect that person in any other way.

We had better listen to St. Paul once more…

“Brothers and sisters: Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.

“Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you considers himself wise in this age, let him become a fool, so as to become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God, for it is written: ‘God catches the wise in their own ruses’, and again: ‘The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.’ So let no one boast about human beings, for everything belongs to you, Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or the present or the future: all belong to you, and you to Christ, and Christ to God” (1 Corinthians 3:16-23).

The Solution Begins with our Holiness

For the Christian, and for many others, these tragedies are heart-wrenching. In conversations with friends, family, and strangers over the years who have shared in my dismay concerning the culture of death, reactions have been varied; even more so when friends and even family have disagreed that there was even a problem to confront.

Having been a part of the Pro-Life Movement, which confronts this culture in a very specific way, for more than three decades, I have voted my beliefs, marched in public, prayed at abortion mills, led parish respect life ministries, supported women in crisis pregnancies and tried to raise awareness through pro-life homilies, public advocacy and education. Many respect life committees have a three-pronged approach that includes (1) prayer, (2) public advocacy and (3) education. These activities are all good and necessary.  The work that many in the pro-life movement have performed will not go unrewarded, although we may not see the extent of the good that has been accomplished until we pass to the next life. May God always bless those he has called to a focus on ending abortion and other direct threats on innocent human life. Maybe He is calling you to this work.

But, as I wrote above, contraception followed by abortion was just the beginning.  Having also been a husband, father, catechist and deacon, I am acutely aware of the wider destruction that has followed the failure to respect the right to life.  Raising physically and spiritually healthy children in the fog of this culture is an enormous challenge as is simply preserving one’s own faith from growing stagnant from indifference or a sense of helplessness. For that is exactly what is afflicting so many—we live as if in a fog that has blinded us to the reality all around.  What I mean to say, is that even for those who recognize that a problem exists, even they may not recognize the extent and dangers of the problem.  So very many live in moral uncertainty and hardly are aware of it; they have been so inundated by the message of the culture that they no longer see and hear clearly.

Pope St. John Paul II wrote in Evangelium Vitae, “In fact, while the climate of widespread moral uncertainty can in some way be explained by the multiplicity and gravity of today’s social problems, and these can sometimes mitigate the subjective responsibility of individuals, it is no less true that we are confronted by an even larger reality, which can be described as a veritable structure of sin. This reality is characterized by the emergence of a culture which denies solidarity and in many cases takes the form of a veritable ‘culture of death.’ This culture is actively fostered by powerful cultural, economic and political currents which encourage an idea of society excessively concerned with efficiency. Looking at the situation from this point of view, it is possible to speak in a certain sense of a war of the powerful against the weak: a life which would require greater acceptance, love and care is considered useless, or held to be an intolerable burden, and is therefore rejected in one way or another. A person who, because of illness, handicap or, more simply, just by existing, compromises the well-being or life-style of those who are more favored tends to be looked upon as an enemy to be resisted or eliminated. In this way a kind of ‘conspiracy against life’ is unleashed. This conspiracy involves not only individuals in their personal, family or group relationships, but goes far beyond, to the point of damaging and distorting, at the international level, relations between peoples and States.”

And recently, Pope Francis forcefully reminded us, “It is must be therefore reiterated the strongest opposition to any direct attack on life, especially innocent and defenseless life, and the unborn child in the womb is the most concrete example of innocence … Let us remember the words of the Second Vatican Council: ‘From the moment of its conception, life must be guarded with the greatest care while abortion and infanticide are unspeakable crimes’ (Gaudium et spes, § 51).”

This article is not intended to list practical steps and actions. It has this one point. Of all the activities and ways we must be engaged in this cultural battle over the dignity of human life, there is one thing that matters more than the rest.  Indeed, all of our other efforts depend on this one thing… We must become holy saints living the life of God’s love.

We have been duped, even many who seek God in truth; too many are following the ways of the world. We must have this new toy, this new car, this larger house, this new trophy wife/husband, all the while discarding what we had before. We are following the ways of the world when what we must do is follow the ways of God. Even if you are the only person swimming against the current, isn’t that preferable to perishing over the falls into the dark abyss?

Holiness is God’s way and we must ask ourselves the hard question, “Am I truly following His Will?”  Whenever I speak to groups about holiness, there are always those who roll their eyes and utter, “Oh no.” Maybe they think holiness is not attainable.  Maybe that is what you think too. But holiness is what God made us for and it is to holiness that he continues to call us. Do we not believe and trust in God?

Neither you or I will not be in a position to transform the culture until we have surrendered totally to God and each become a holy person who loves unconditionally. As our God has spoken to us:

The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the whole Israelite community and tell them: Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy.

“You shall not bear hatred for your brother or sister in your heart. Though you may have to reprove your fellow citizen, do not incur sin because of him. Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against any of your people. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:1-2, 18-19).

A Mass marking the observance of the 42nd anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion will take place on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 4:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Victory National Shrine, Ridge Road and South Park Ave., Lackawanna. The Most Reverend Richard J. Malone, bishop of Buffalo, will be the celebrant.

During the Mass, the diocesan Office of Pro-Life Activities will present the annual Pro-Vita Awards. These awards are intended to recognize people who have labored tirelessly for the pro-life cause and to give them strength, encouragement and support.

This year’s recipients are:

Youth: Kaitlyn Hogg, St. Gregory the Great Parish, Williamsville

Organization: 40 Days for Life, Peter Adornetto, regional coordinator

Lay: Marilyn Neil, retired registered nurse, former patient representative, Sisters Hospital, Buffalo

Religious: Father Martin X. Moleski, SJ, professor, Canisius College/Jesuit Community

Catholics are encouraged to participate in a solemn observance of the Roe v. Wade anniversary by placing a candle (electric, battery-operated or wax) in the front window of their homes at sundown on Wednesday, Jan. 21. The candle serves as a reminder of 50 million unborn babies who have been aborted since the 1973 Supreme Court decision.

The annual March for Life will take place in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Jan. 22. Everyone is welcome to march as a reminder of the tragedy of 42 years of legalized abortion in America. Buses will depart early on Wednesday, Jan. 21, from several locations.

Pregnant on campus – new website offers information, resources

Washington D.C., Dec 20, 2014 / 07:50 am (CNA/EWTN News).- A new website is being launched to help pregnant college students find the help they need to stay in school and have their child.

“Becoming unexpectedly pregnant while in college can be a scary situation for so many women,” said Students for Life president Kristan Hawkins in a statement announcing the website, pregnantoncampus.org.

She noted that many Planned Parenthood facilities are proximate to college campuses, and that “many of these students have no idea about the resources available to them on their college campuses to help them stay in school and parent their children, which is why this website is so unique and needed.”

The website was launched in early December as the latest step in the group’s “Pregnant on Campus” initiative, begun in 2011. It will provide information on resources available for young pregnant mothers such as housing aid, clothing, food, child care, scholarships, adoption agencies, and counseling.

Students for Life groups across the country have compiled the information they have gathered to help pregnant students. In addition, the site will allow students to post more information directly to the site through crowdsourcing. Resources that are “never in one place” will now be readily available for those who need them.

“We talk about ‘abortion isn’t your only option’ and ‘you have lots of options’,” Hawkins said, “but oftentimes she doesn’t really see that.” The prevailing assumption on campuses, she maintained, “is you get pregnant and you drop out or you have an abortion.”

Students for Life is trying to change this. The group’s top priority is to ensure pregnant women stay in school and have their child, Hawkins insisted, “for her future and her child’s future.”

Hawkins said the group plans to harness “intensive Google advertising” to further spread the word about the website.

Austin, Texas, Dec 12, 2014 / 07:09 pm (CNA).- Heroic Media is celebrating their most successful year yet, reporting their pro-life ads have generated more than 360,000 responses, the highest number in the apostolate’s ten-year history.

“This is more than a number for us – every woman we are able to connect with a pregnancy center means a potential life saved,” Joe Young, vice president of operations at Heroic Media, said in a Dec. 9 statement.

Heroic Media is a pro-life organization that uses a variety of media outlets to connect pregnant women to life-affirming resources, utilizing information and pregnancy centers to provide women with alternative choices to abortion.

“Heroic Media is committed to serving women with positive messages. Our team of media experts works to produce and place research-based messages to meet women right where they are,” stated Marissa Cope, director of marketing for Heroic Media.

The more than 360,000 persons who contacted Heroic Media because of its advertising were given access to information about pregnancy resources and support. Contacts included texts, chats, online clicks, website visit, and calls to pregnancy centers.

“We empower women with information and access to hopeful, life-affirming resources,” Cope stated.

Those who responded to Heroic Media were given access to pregnancy centers across the country for support and information. Various pregnancy centers nationwide teamed with Heroic Media to spread life-affirming messages, promoting adoption instead of abortion as a viable option.

Currently, the organization is connected with pregnancy centers in ten states.

The increase in responses led to an 88 percent increase in connections to life-affirming resources: 336,000, up from 178,000 in 2013.

Heroic Media uses television commercials, billboards, and internet advertisements, and in an effort to continue its success is launching three new television commercials for the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

These advertisements will promote life-affirming alternatives to abortion for pregnant women who are seeking other options. Currently, Heroic Media’s television commercials air on 975 networks every month.

“We are overjoyed with these numbers and are already considering how we can reach even more women who may be considering abortion, to connect them with life-affirming resources and information,” Young stated, hopeful that Heroic Media would continue their success in reaching pregnant women.
